Avoiding Internet-Only Retail Scams

Consumers are increasingly using the internet for their shopping needs. Many shoppers feel that it is cheaper buying items online. Plus, you do not have to waste gas and go through a hassle getting to a mall or department store. However, there is a misconception that buying solely through online outlets is always cheaper. There are a few things to keep in mind when buying over the internet:

• Many online retailers offer minimal to free shipping. Keep in mind that free shipping only becomes free when you spend a certain amount. For example, a retailer might offer free shipping for order that are over $100. However, you might find that most of the items sold are under $100. Therefore, you are likely to spend more than you originally planned to if you attempt to get the free shipping.
• Some online retailers claim that they have the cheapest prices and that you do not need to shop around. These same companies throw phrases like “75% off retail price” to lure you in. Although this might be true, in some cases the items are more expensive than those you can find in department stores. If you are interested in a particular item, it is advisable that you shop around first.
• Stores that sell items online and in-store might have different prices in each. You might find that some of the online items are more expensive than those found in stores.
• Some sales appear online before they appear in-store. Companies often use virtual shoppers as a test to see whether a particular sale might be worth launching in its stores.

At the end of the day, it is worth looking at prices both online and in-store. This is especially true of large ticket items. Although this might seem like a hassle, it will be worth it if you want to save money.
